Undergraduates earning graduate credit at USJ

The majority of graduate programs at the University of Saint Joseph accept applications year-round on a rolling admissions basis. However, several programs have their own deadlines. For more information about admission to a specific program, please contact Graduate Admissions, graduate@usj.edu or 860.231.5261.

Starting the admission process

Applications for graduate programs are available on www.usj.edu/grad-application. Once an application is received and processed (generally 1-2 business days), candidates will be sent login credentials to our admissions website by email and standard mail. They will be able to track their folder and see what admission requirements are needed. All admission documents should be sent directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions.

1. Non-degree entry

If you wish to complete coursework outside of a degree program, you are a non-degree seeking candidate. To enroll as a non-degree seeking student, you must submit these admission documents:

  • The Non-Degree Seeking Application, www.usj.edu/grad-application
  • A non-refundable $50 application fee, paid at www.usj.edu/payonline
  • Official transcripts from all degree-granting institutions, including the date of degree conferral. You must also send transcripts from other institutions you attended that show you have the required GPA and coursework for your USJ program.

2. Matriculation

Candidates must apply and submit all required documents to complete their admission application before the admissions file can be sent to program-specific faculty for review. For any of our graduate programs, you must submit these documents:

  • An application which can be found at www.usj.edu/grad-application
  • A non-refundable $50 application fee paid at www.usj.edu/payonline
  • An official transcript showing a conferred bachelor’s degree (or master’s degree if applicable) from a regionally accredited institution
  • Transcripts from all other institutions attended (if applicable)
  • Two letters of recommendation

Individual programs may have additional application requirements listed in the catalog or USJ website. You will also be able to see the requirements on the admissions website once you have received a login from the Office of Admissions.

International applications

On campus

International candidates interested in a graduate program at USJ must submit all the required documents for their selected program. The additional documents required for international students are:

  • An International Student Supplemental Application
  • Certification of Finances
  • TOEFL scores of 79 or higher or IELTS scores of 6.5 or higher (if English is not the first and primary language)
  • An official international transcript evaluation of all coursework completed outside of the United States, provided through an approved NACES member organization, www.naces.org

The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service permits USJ to admit non-immigrant students. Upon matriculation into a graduate degree program, they will be issued an I-20 A/B, which is used to pursue an F-1 student visa through the American Embassy or Consulate in the student’s home country.

Online programs

International applicants for online graduate programs will have their applications reviewed only after submitting these documents:

  • TOEFL or IELTS scores
  • An evaluation by an approved NACES member, www.naces.org, of all coursework completed outside of the United States
  • All admission requirements for their program of interest

See International admissions for more information.

Note: International students pursuing online programs do not qualify for an F-1 student visa.

Readmission policy

All students who left the University (including academically dismissed and administratively withdrawn) must reapply to the University and pay a non-refundable application fee. However, formal application for readmission is not required of a student returning from an official or approved leave of absence.

The decision to readmit a former student is at the discretion of the department, under the guidance of the program director. Program or department faculty will evaluate the application to determine if there is justification for readmission and if the student can meet the GPA requirements for the program. Students who were academically dismissed or administratively withdrawn must include a written statement with their reapplication stating how they are now able to be successful in their academic program.

Students are held to any changes in degree program requirements, based on the current applicable catalog, as well as current admission and progression standards. Programs may require previous coursework to be repeated, depending on the length of absence from the program.

If a student’s GPA is below the program requirement at readmission, the program director will advise the student of his/her probation status, and the criteria required for progression in the program.

Students will not be readmitted to the same program more than once if academically dismissed or administratively withdrawn a second time.

Readmission into a different program is considered a new application.

Readmission process

When your file is complete it will be sent to the director of the program you are interested in. Candidates will be notified when an admission decision has been made, by both email and standard mail. To be eligible for financial aid, candidates must be admitted to a master’s or doctoral degree program and taking a minimum of six credits per semester.

Incomplete applications

Admissions will keep incomplete applications on file for one year. If an application has not been completed after one year, it will be considered inactive and the candidate will be administratively withdrawn. Incomplete files are destroyed after one year if the candidate has not been admitted or there has been no enrollment activity reported.
