RELS 262 - Buddhism in America


3 Credits
This course is designed to introduce students to the complex issues and ideas surrounding the American encounter with Asian Buddhism. Attention will be given to the developments within Asia and Europe which have influenced the spread of Buddhism to the United States. The major themes of the course include the history of the systematic study of Buddhism in the West which was an extension of European fascination with Asia as a source of regeneration, the arrival of Asian Buddhists to the U.S. beginning with indigent Chinese workers, the developments of convert and ethnic Buddhism, and inter-religious dialog between Buddhism and Christianity.
