COMM 222 - Documentary Film: History, Theory, and Practice

3 Credits
This course will examine the major trends in the documentary film tradition, beginning with the first efforts in the early part of the 20th century and moving up to the present. Starting with the work of John Grierson, Robert Flaherty and Dziga Vertov, we will see how the struggle over questions of truth, objectivity and social activism were present in the earliest documentary films. These questions become recurring themes as we move through the progression of documentary history, bringing us to the present where we now have a dynamic culture of documentary that ranges from the expository to the experimental. Documentary is increasingly serving as long form journalism, filling a gap left by understaffed newsrooms and sound-bite journalism. Through lecture, discussion, hands-on experience and film screenings, we will explore the past, present and future of the documentary film tradition.
