This master of arts program provides in-depth training for licensed teachers in teaching of Special Education.

This program meets the new State Board of Education policy, which reads: Applicants for a professional educator certificate who are first certified in Connecticut after July 1, 2016, shall complete a minimum of 15 graduate credits of content or content pedagogy, either as part of or in addition to a master’s degree.

Continuation Requirements

Students must earn a grade of C or better in all courses for continuous progression throughout the program.

SPEC 543 - Instructional Planning and Interventions in Special Education: Writing and Study Skills 3 Credits
SPEC 540 - Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Interventions 3 Credits
SPEC 535 - Laws and Special Education 3 Credits
SPEC 539 - Universal Design for Learning: Proactive Inclusion for All Students 3 Credits
SPEC 554 - Research-Based Math Interventions 3 Credits
SPEC 526 - Educational Assessment 3 Credits
SPEC 542 - The Science of Early Reading Development 3 Credits
SPEC 534 - Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports 3 Credits
SPEC 530 - Research in Special Education 3 Credits
SPEC 536 - Practicum: Special Education 4 Credits
SPEC 537 - Practicum: Special Education for Licensed Teachers 4 Credits
Some students are able to use SPEC 540 - Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Interventions or SPEC 554 - Research-Based Math Interventions for one of their practicum placements. Please see your advisor for eligibility.
