Credits for Prior Learning

The Prior Learning Assessment Process allows matriculated students to earn up to 30 credits for college-level knowledge that they have gained through life or work experience. Proficiency and CLEP Examinations

College credit may also be awarded to matriculated students for successful completion of proficiency examinations. Such examinations may be designed and administered by the faculty of a department for specific courses, or standardized exams such as CLEP (College Level Examination Placement) or DANTES (Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support) may be used as the basis for awards.  Please see complete list of Proficiency and CLEP Credit  exams accepted.

Portfolios

Students in the Program for Adult Learners must satisfactorily complete INTD 115 - Prior Learning Assessment Theory and Practice  before submitting a portfolio for prior learning credit. One free submission allowed within six months of completion of INTD 115. 

Subsequent portfolios are $125 paid directly to the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL). Available to students in the Program for Adult Learners. Students must satisfactorily complete INTD 115 - Prior Learning Assessment Theory and Practice  before submitting a portfolio for prior learning credit.

Degree Requirements

Changes to PAL graduation requirements:

  •  Waiver of Kinesthetic (KN) requirement
  • 18 of the student’s final 24 credits must be completed at USJ (meaning that a student in her senior year can take 6 intersession credits, or a final summer course, at a community college without seeking a waiver).
