Nursing, Post-Master’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate

A post-masters certificate is available for Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialists who want to certify as Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners. For those who are not Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialists, but are Nurse Practitioners in other specialties, additional coursework is needed. All guidelines and policies for the Nurse Practitioner track students also apply to the students in the Certificate Program.

For Current Psychiatric Clinial Nurse Specialists


Certificate Requirements (9-18 credits and 250 clinical hours


Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialists who have not completed the 3Ps must complete these prior to taking a clinial course.

NURS 507 - Advanced Physical Assessment (3 credits)
NURS 519 - Advanced Pathophysiology  (3 credits)
NURS 535 - Advanced Pharmacology  (3 credits)

Total: 9 credits

Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialists must complete the following courses in addition to any missing 3Ps named above.

NURS 521 - Advanced Clinical Practicum (PMHNP track)  (3 credits)
NURS 530 - Neuropsychopharmacology  (3 credits)
NURS 544 - Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment of Mental Health Conditions  (3 credits)

Total: 9 credits

Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialists must complete at least 250 faculty supervised clinical hours based on reviewing their past clinical hours completed in their Psychiatric CNS Master’s Program. Clinical hours must be across the life span, which includes children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients.

For Current Nurse Practioners in Other Specialties


Certificate Requirements (9-26 credits and 500 clinical hours


Nurse Practitioners in other specialties who have not completed the 3Ps must complete them prior to taking a clinical course.

NURS 507 - Advanced Physical Assessment  (3 credits)
NURS 519 - Advanced Pathophysiology  (3 credits)
NURS 535 - Advanced Pharmacology  (3 credits)

Total: 9 credits

Nurse Practitioners certified in other specialties must complete the following courses in addition to any 3Ps named above.

NURS 501 - Nursing Practice in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing I  (4 credits)
NURS 503 - Nursing Practice II: Group Theory and Practice  (4 credits)
NURS 521 - Advanced Clinical Practicum (PMHNP track)  (3 credits)
NURS 530 - Neuropsychopharmacology  (3 credits)
NURS 544 - Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment of Mental Health Conditions  (3 credits)

Total: 17 credits

Nurse Practitioners in other Specialties must complete at least 500 faculty preceptor supervised clinical hours.
