SPEC 535 - Laws and Special Education 3 Credits The emphasis of this course is on legislation affecting the planning and delivery of services to children with special education needs. Specific reference will be made to federal and state legislation and relevant court decisions. Topics include the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and No Child Left Behind. Current litigation in special education will be examined. Culminating experience includes development of an Individual Education Program (IEP) plan and IEP meeting simulation.
