SPEC 572 - Dyslexia and Reading Disabilities: Connecting Assessment to Instruction Through Structured Literacy


3 Credits
An advanced course for licensed teachers that focuses on the in-depth understanding of diverse reading profiles, including dyslexia, and the identification and remediation of reading difficulties through structured literacy instruction. Focus on understanding and applying principles and practices of structured literacy instruction in phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, and word recognition, and automatic fluent word reading. Teachers will apply their understanding of the essential components of reading by:

  • Administering standardized criterion and norm-referenced curriculum-based measures
  • Developing an individualized scope and sequence of instruction and delivering a diagnostic-prescriptive multi-sensory, systemic and explicit series of individualized structured literacy lessons
  • Monitoring and report student progress

Course-embedded field experience is required. Programming in special and general education will be considered in the development and delivery of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
