COMP 117 - Innovation and Technology


3 Credits
A survey course intended to introduce the role of technology in promoting and sustaining organizational innovation using an interdisciplinary approach. This is an important part of engineering, computer science, and business training. In this course students will learn the connection between innovation and problem solving, the legal and ethical responsibilities of innovation with technology, the 8- step problem solving/design method, the four types of innovation (basic research, breakthrough innovation, sustaining innovation, and disruptive innovation), the business of innovation, and an overview of innovative technologies. Topics include: Innovation and ethics, AI, IoT, augmented reality, virtual reality, blockchain, 5G communication, 3D printing, Spreadsheets and Databases, Big Data, nanotechnology, quantum computing, cybersecurity, and hyperpersonalization. Materials will be drawn from the disciplines of business, computer science, engineering, ethics, science fiction, law, and education. (LAS)(Core:Computer)
