BIOL 418 - Microbial Ecology/Environmental Microbiology


4 Credits
Ecological interactions between microbes: viruses, bacteria, archae, some protists and fungi. Roles of microorganisms in relation to animal and plants. Function of microbes in modifying climate and the physical environment. Student research projects provide opportunity to investigate areas of personal interest. Three hours lecture. Three hour laboratory per week reviews basic and advanced techniques, followed by project-based research. Projects may require additional time outside of the lab period depending upon the nature of the project. This is one choice of the capstone courses required for majors. Laboratory fee $75.
Prerequisite(s): BIOL 117 - Introduction to Evolution and Kingdoms  and CHEM 176 - Fundamental Chemical Principles II  and BIOL 237 - Integrative Biological Systems
