Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), M.A.

With a growing population of English language learners, TESOL Education is a major need in the area and throughout the state of Connecticut. This program will provide the practical learning, knowledge, skills and strategies to use in your classroom today. The program will also help teachers develop stronger relationships with all students but particularly English language learners and their families. 

Program outcomes

The Master of Arts in TESOL Education is similar to a cohort model. Students meet one night a week. The coursework takes two years. Students take a capstone praticum, EDUC 579 - TESOL Practicum 

This program meets the new State Board of Education policy, which reads: Applicants for a professional educator certificate who are first certified in Connecticut after July 1, 2016, shall complete a minimum of 15 graduate credits of content or content pedagogy, either as part of or in addition to a master’s degree. 

Acceptance requirements

Candidates in the Master of Arts in TESOL Education program must hold at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, with a preferred degree conferral (or cumulative) GPA of 2.5. 

Continuation requirements

Students must earn a grade of B or better in their first attempt in their first two classes to remain in the program. They must earn a B or better in all courses for continuous progression throughout the program.

Degree requirements

  • Successful completion of program’s courses 
  • Passing score on the comprehensive exam after all coursework is complete

Career outcome

Successful candidates will earn a Master of Arts degree in TESOL Education. Students holding an initial teaching certification can also use coursework from this program to apply for cross-endorsement through the state of Connecticut’s Department of Education.

Required courses (30 credits)


The program includes all required courses for Connecticut teachers holding a teaching license to be eligible for cross-endorsement in TESOL and bilingual education. There are no electives in the program.
