NURS 504 - Advanced Practice in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing II

This course is the second of the clinical courses that provide students with the opportunity to integrate and apply advanced practice knowledge and skills about psychotherapeutic approaches to the assessment and treatment of mental health conditions across the lifespan. Evidence-based content related to human psycho-social-cultural development, theoretical and technical elements of the nurse-patient therapeutic relationship, behavioral health assessment data and psychotherapeutic concepts and skills integral to application of therapy modalities will be discussed and analyzed, including various cognitive and behavioral therapies, family therapy, crisis/trauma treatment, and complementary treatment methods. Specific attention is given to concepts and techniques related to the psychotherapeutic treatment of special populations, including veterans, people facing substance use/abuse, LGBTQ communities, domestic violence victims, sexual assault victims, people with HIV/AIDs and HCV, incarcerated persons, and those experiencing health care disparities. The course offers experiential learning of practice skills related to these psychotherapeutic approaches as well as patient case analysis to assist students in designing and applying comprehensive plans of care that reflect increasing competence in clinical decision-making.
