SPEC 540 - Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Interventions 3 Credits An advanced course for licensed teachers that focuses on structured literacy interventions in vocabulary and reading comprehension for students with diverse reading profiles, including dyslexia. Teachers will apply their understanding of the major skill domains that contribute to the development of academic vocabulary and deep comprehension of grade-level text as well as learn how symptoms of dyslexia might delay academic vocabulary and reading comprehension development by:
- Developing and implementing an individualized scope and sequence of instruction based on research-based principles of structured literacy, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), to design and differentiate instruction and interventions.
- Monitoring and reporting student progress
Course-embedded field experience is required. Programming in special and general education will be considered in the development and delivery of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Prerequisite(s): SPEC 545 - Seminar in Intensive Intervention in Reading: Dyslexia and Reading Disabilities and SPEC 572 - Dyslexia and Reading Disabilities: Connecting Assessment to Instruction Through Structured Literacy
