SPEC 543 - Intensive Interventions in Writing


3 Credits
An advanced course for licensed teachers that focuses on the essential principles and practices of structured literacy instruction in writing. Teachers will apply their understanding of the major skill domains that contribute to written expression and the language processing requirements of proficient writing, specifically focused on the development of syntax and written discourse and diverse profiles of writers, including those with dyslexia by:

  • Developing and implementing an individualized scope and sequence of instruction based on research-based principles of structured literacy in writing.
  • Monitoring and reporting student progress.

 

Course-embedded field experience is required. Programming in special and general education will be considered in the development and delivery of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). 
Prerequisite(s): SPEC 545 - Seminar in Intensive Intervention in Reading: Dyslexia and Reading Disabilities  and SPEC 572 - Dyslexia and Reading Disabilities: Connecting Assessment to Instruction Through Structured Literacy
