The M.A. in Early Childhood/Special Education is a program for licensed teachers in Connecticut that aligns with the State Department of Education’s requirements for a cross-endorsement as an Early Childhood/Special Education teacher (grades PK-3 licensure and grades PK-K Special Education licensure; CT Certification #113).
Program Outcomes
- Learn best practices in curriculum and instruction in early childhood education
- Develop equitable teaching practices that support the learning of all students
- Complete and collaborate in field-based program that connects theory and practice
Acceptance Requirements
- Graduate admission application and nonrefundable admission fee
- A conferred bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
- A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.5
- Two sealed official transcripts of all undergraduate work and any prior graduate work
- Two letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to the candidate’s suitability to work with children and families. Note: Recommendations must be from individuals who are not family members, personal friends, or members of the Department of Education at the University of Saint Joseph

Continuation Requirements
Candidates must earn a C or better in all courses for continuous progress through the program. After 12 credits, candidates must maintain a GPA of 2.67 or higher throughout the program.
Exit Requirements
Students must complete a comprehensive evaluation to meet the university Master of Arts requirement. Successful completion of ECSE 595 - Independent Study satisfies this requirement for the Master of Arts Early Childhood/Special Education.
